Gelato Week
Gelato week
Even though we have gelato daily when in Italy, this week we decided to map gelato places in our neighborhood in Florence. This meant we got to go to different places every day and call it homework!! Our goal is to go to five places, try flavors, rate them and write about it.
Our first stop was pasticceria Batoni. I had a cup with two flavors: chocolate and stracciatella. In case you didn’t read my blog where I define stracciatella, it’s like chocolate chip, but it has slices of chocolate throughout. It was really creamy and the chocolate chips were huge! Overall it was pretty good. There were a good number of flavors and the outside seating was good.
Next we went to Slurp. The flavors I got were Chocolate Crisp and Stracciatella. The chocolate crisp had small, crunchy chocolate-coated crispies. The stracciatella had one giant chocolate chunk that was so big I had to bite it. I saved that part until the end and it was yummy. No other gelateria that I have seen has had the chocolate crispy flavor. I hope I can find chocolate crispy gelato again! The shop was small and had about 12 flavors of gelato and two cases, one with sorbet. Outside there were benches with a lot of bugs. Overall based on flavor, it was great, but based on bugs, next time, we’ll take it to go!
Next was my personal favorite Gelatondo. I chose chocolate and coffee because I like chocolate and I did not want to have stracciatella again. Most of the other places did not have coffee as an option. The texture was great and it was creamier than all the others. The combination of coffee and chocolate was like a different flavor entirely. It was a good combination And I wish more places had those flavors. The Gelateria had 14 flavors, their special was gelatando which was made with nutella and mascarpone which is a type of cheese. My mom got that flavor and we got to try it, it was good but I liked my flavors more. The shop only had indoor seating but it had a nice view out the window. Overall it was the best of the three so far.
Then was Righi Firenze. There were 8 or so flavors but not all of the tubs had gelato. The stracciatella was almost out but there was a lot of the coffee and it was really good. The place was not open when we got there so we waited for a few minutes to get our gelato. When it opened the man waved us over because we had asked before if it was open. There was no seating anywhere so we ate as we walked and that was fine.
And lastly La strega nocciola. I had chocolate and stracciatella. The flavors were really good and the gelato was creamy. The seating was outside and there weren't too many bugs. The experience was even better because there was a cat. The cat was golden and very shy but also super cute. There was a t-shirt that I wanted but could not get because they only had it at their main place in the center of town. If you are ever in Florence do not go to the one near the duomo or the ponte vecchio. It is cheaper to go to the one near our neighborhood.
This week was a gelato filled one!
